Our Community

Our Community Commitment

At Cargill Contracting Ltd, our roots run deep in East Otago, but our impact stretches across Dunedin, Southland, and up to Waimakariri. We’re proud to be a locally owned and operated business, and we see ourselves not just as a contractor, but as an active part of the communities we serve.

Many of our team have lived in the area for generations and have been part of the Cargill whānau since the early days. We employ nearly 40 local people and invest in long-term careers, training, and development, building capability and opportunity for our region.

Our commitment to community goes beyond the worksite. We support local sports clubs and events, kindergartens, schools, and grassroots organisations. Through the Fern Fuel for Schools programme, we direct fuel rebates to schools like Waitati and Warrington to support learning initiatives with an environmental focus.

We’ve also partnered with Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki to support native planting and restoration work along the Blueskin Bay to Port Chalmers cycle track, contributing labour, gravel, and irrigation infrastructure. We’re proud to extend this commitment through our involvement in the Halo Project, helping restore native ecosystems and waterways across East Otago.

As kaitiaki of the land, we take our environmental responsibilities seriously. We’ve supported Ōrokonui Ecosanctuary with critical sediment management works to protect their predator-proof fence, and we regularly collaborate with the Otago Regional Council on river maintenance and fish passage upgrades under the Toitū Te Hakapupu programme.

Whether it’s planting over 9,800 native trees, restoring fish habitats, or helping Enviroschools with earthworks, our focus is always on leaving things better than we found them.

For us, building strong roads, tracks, and infrastructure is just one part of the job. Supporting the people, places, and future of our region is what truly defines who we are and why we do what we do.

Every great project starts from the ground up, with care, connection, and respect for the land we work on.
