Our Environment and Sustainability

At Cargill Contracting Ltd, we recognise our role as kaitiaki: guardians of the land, waterways, and wildlife across the regions we work.

This sense of responsibility is woven through every project we deliver, from riverbanks to ridgelines.

With decades of practical experience in environmental protection and restoration, our team takes great care when working near waterways, wetlands, or native habitats.

Our crews are trained in erosion and sediment control, dewatering practices, and fish passage protection, and we have successfully delivered culvert replacements and stream realignments that improve both infrastructure resilience and native species migration. Recent projects for the Otago Regional Council, such as culvert upgrades on the Watkins and Pleasant Rivers, are prime examples of this commitment in action.

We work in close partnership with mana whenua, including Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, and actively engage with catchment groups and conservation trusts. Whether planting natives, supporting predator-free sanctuaries like Ōrokonui, or restoring fish habitats under the Toitū Te Hakapupu initiative, our focus is always on working with the land, not simply upon it.

Our environmental responsibility also extends to how we run our business. We are actively tracking and reducing our carbon footprint in line with science-based targets, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. We’ve invested in fuel-efficient equipment, adopted anti-idling technology, extended service intervals to reduce waste, and are shifting to electric and low-emission vehicles as our fleet renews. As part of this, we monitor and report on our Scope 1–3 emissions and favour local suppliers who share our low-carbon values.

We believe that protecting our environment, supporting biodiversity, and operating in a way that respects te taiao (the natural world) isn’t just good practice; it’s the right thing to do.
